You have seen the new Thor Ragnarok trailer and now you are wondering what you have just laid witnessed to besides boatloads of Asgardian awesomeness. Don’t worry about it, Uncanny! has you covered with who these new characters are!
Let’s get right down to it, if you haven’t seen the trailer…see you in about 2 minutes.
Are you finished geeking out yet? Grand! There is a whole lot to take in with some very brief scenes of fantastic, Thor centric characters making their Marvel Cinematic Universe debut.
Hela
How the Hela did Hela catch and proceed to crumble Mjolnir? With a scene like that one can’t help but take her seriously right from the jump. With her Asgardian god-level abilities and penchant for death, Thor is up for one Hel of a fight.
The Asgardian goddess of death and ruler of Hel debuted in the pages of Journey Into Mystery #102 and was co-adapted from Norse mythology by Stan Lee & Jack Kirby.
Valkyrie
Debuting from the pages of Avengers #83, co-adapted from Norse mythology by John Buscema and Roy Thomas, Valkyrie takes on a significantly different appearance than her comic counterpart. Valkyrie was appointed by Odin to lead the Valkyrior, whom would canvas Asgardian battlefields and take the slain who are worthy to Valhalla…which Hela has always wanted to overtake.
In the trailer, it looks like Valkyrie has a run-in with Hela along wih the Valkyrior and finds her way to what is presumably Sakarr, a planet wretched with contests and gladiators from around the universe. Furthermore, Sakarr is home to the comic based event Planet Hulk.
Grandmaster
Speaking of contests, it’s Grandmaster time! One of the Elders of the Universe, like the Collector, Grandmaster first showed face in The Avengers #69. In the original 1982 three-part series, Contest of Champions, Grandmaster and Death choose earth’s mightiest heroes to battle it out over essentially, the life of the Collector.
The word “contender” was thrown out there by Valkyrie which may very well imply that this may be the MCU version of Contest of Champions. But what role will Loki play besides sitting on the opposite side of the couch than Grandmaster and looking half terrified seeing Hulk again? What are the stakes in this battle?
Skurge
The Asgardian also known as The Executioner, made his first appearance in comics in Journey Into Mystery #103…yes, one issue after the debut of Hela…and was also co-created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. Skurge has always been the mainstay beside The Enchantress, whom we will presumably see in a yet to be released second Thor Ragnarok trailer.
In the comics Skurge wields a dual edged magical ax and defends his undying love for The Enchantress by doing her bidding. He has a history of run-ins with Hela, defending Asgard from her hostile takeover attempts. Skurge is loyal to the bads for all the wrong reasons, but still wants an Asgard which makes his place in the movie that much more intriguing.
This wraps up our Uncanny! Insider Thor Ragnarok character quips, who are you most looking forward to seeing on the big screen?
One thing is for sure, the trailer is a smashing success!
