Marvel Tidbits With Dustin

Marvel Tidbits With Dustin
By Dustin M. Best

Welcome to this week's Marvel Tidbits! It is I, Dustin, with those nuggets of Marvel knowledge that bless your happy meal accompanied with a side of music for your day and a refreshment on what you should be reading! That's a fine combo meal right there.

Rich Buckler, Rest In Peace

deathlok marvel rich buckler

Starting on a somber note is never fun, with that being said, the Uncanny! family is sad to hear about the loss of artist Rich Buckler. Co-creator of Marvel cult favorite character, Deathlok, Rich also made artistic contributions to DC as well as a solid run on Fantastic Four through the 70's.

Thanks for everything Rich, your artistic contributions will live on forever!

Agents of...SWORD?

For those Agents of Shield viewers...that ending though! The season finale brought us perhaps the most complete episode of SHIELD yet, wrapping up multiple storylines while bringing us to tears...thanks Mack! The last scene of Season 4 plunges us forward into what is sure to be a grandiose Season 5 and likely introduces SWORD into the MCU.

agents of sword marvel shield

Agents of S.W.O.R.D?

For those who don't know, SWORD is basically the sister agency to SHIELD, only it operates in Earth's orbit and monitors galactic threats. The kind of threats that can only lead to larger and fiercer foes while paralleling Marvel's Infinity War movie coming in 2018. The only question will be if Marvel actually owns the rights to SWORD since the organization debuted in the pages of Astonishing X-Men. Time will tell and the next season cannot come soon enough! To space!

Bane of Venom

hardy bane venom tom spider-man

My Spider-Sense did not see this casting news coming (partly because it doesn't exsist)...Tom Hardy as Venom in his very own solo movie targeting an October, 2018 release from Sony. As a comic geek, how sweet does it get to go from Bane to Venom? I mean almost as awesome as going from Thanos to Cable, right Josh Brolin?

The giant elephant in the room in light of this news, is the fact that this Venom will not be tied into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. So whatever happens with Spider-Man Homecoming, will not be woven into the story of the strictly Sony Venom movie. As even the most casual Marvel reader knows, the history of Venom goes hand in hand with Spidey lore. Some would say, there is no Venom without the spectacular web slinger.

I personally will give this time to air out, because...well...it's not this hot mess:

Comic of the Week

secret empire 2

Secret Empire #2 hit shelves this past week and it just keeps swinging! This issue impressed with Miles being so forthright regarding the visions that most of the heroes experienced during Civil War II courtesy of Inhuman, Ulysses. The vision?

miles morales spiderman captain america steve rogers secret empire

Miles Spidey sure seems intent on meeting his fate head on in Washington DC along with Black Widow who has turned her feeling of betrayment into pure resentment for Hydra Steve Rogers. This issue doesn't just leave those two to go out on their own, the rest of The Champions follow Mile's lead as well. The younger group just won't fracture and in-fight, unlike their older Avenger peers, and seems willing to take the fight to the man.

The issue ends with a mysterious figure showing face, saving a damsel in distress from those dastardy Serpeant Society foes. I will leave that spoiler out, but it is now becoming a trend having alternate heroes showing popping up out of no where across Marvel titles recently (See X-Men Blue #1 & Unworthy Thor #5).

Song of the Week

Another highly talented artist passed this past week in Chris Cornell, front man of grunge scene pioneers Soundgarden and later Audioslave. In lieu of his passing, this week's Song of the Week is Soundgarden "Live to Rise" from Marvel's The Avengers. Very fitting to keep fighting and "live to rise".

Until next week, keep on Marveling!

Uncanny! Insider: The Button Part Three Review

Uncanny! Insider: The Button Part Three Review

By Dylan Ashcraft

The third installment of DC Rebirth’s “The Button” event was another thrilling adventure, where this time we pick up with Flash and Batman inside the Flashpoint universes’ Batcave. While this issue didn’t necessarily posses the most clues towards the introduction of the Watchmen, or really anything about the button itself, it did however present us with a couple of feel good moments.

First off starting with the meeting of Bruce Wayne and Thomas Wayne, two scarred people who are from different timelines, who have lost the other in their respective timeline. It was an awesome moment to witness these two characters see one another for the first time since their deaths. However when it all starts up, Thomas doesn’t actually believe Bruce is real. He grabs The Flash by the throat and exclaims that this isn’t real.

After a few minutes of explaining, Thomas comes to grips with Bruce’s existence and elaborates on as to why the Flashpoint universe still exists. Claiming that the timeline/universe was put on life support by some unknown entity. Thomas further on elaborates on the fact that Aquaman and Wonder Woman have come to a momentary truce as they have both agreed to kill Batman first, after doing battle throughout Flashpoint.

The warriors of Aquaman and Wonder Woman’s armies are shown then bursting into Wayne Manor, where they begin to progressively make their way down to the Batcave. We are then treated to, what was my second favorite panel in the entire issue, Bruce and Thomas donning their respective cowls, ready to fight the armies together.

Once the fight ends we find out that Flash has finished repairing the cosmic treadmill (which was destroyed in the end of Flash #21). As Flash and Batman are getting ready to depart from the Flashpoint timeline, the entity decides to ‘pull the plug’ on Flashpoint, which prompts Bruce to try and convince his father to come along with him. Even using the existence of Damian as a sort of leverage point in the attempt to sway Thomas into coming. However what follows is my favorite panel in Batman #22, where Thomas asks Bruce what “Waynes do”, and as Bruce and Barry are whisked away into the timeline via the cosmic treadmill, Thomas rushes forward and simply states...

thomas wayne batman 22 review bruce dc

As Batman and Flash are running through the time stream on the treadmill, Professor Zoom races past them, claiming to have seen who the "Button" belongs to, and states that they have never seen a power like Thawnes.

reverse flash thawne batman dc

That wraps up the third installment of the Button review, which was another absolutely fantastic issue. We saw a few of our questions from last article get answered; although the one regarding Martha’s existence as the Joker was never touched upon. This time, however, we’re left to wonder what exactly happens to Thawne, who does the button belong to, and where did the button take Thawne? Perhaps to the original universe where the Watchmen existed?

We find out in the final issue of this Batman/Flash crossover Flash #22! Be sure to stay tuned for Part 4 of The Button review here on Uncanny! Insider.

IMBIBE: Issue #5- Renato Jones The One% With Southern Tier's Thick Mint

IMBIBE: Issue #5- Renato Jones The One% With Southern Tier's Thick Mint
This blog post is intended for readers 21 and older
by Rob McFee
This Weeks Pairing:

Renato Jones The One%- Season One- Written, Drawn, Colored, and Owned by Kaare Kyle Andrews- Published by Image Comics- January 2017
Black Water Series: Thick Mint- Imperial Stout brewed with chocolate and mint- 10.0% Alcohol by Volume (ABV)- Southern Tier Brewing Company- Lakewood, NY USA

Our pairing begins with a simple question.  What are the best words to describe the sheer awesomeness of these two creations?
Dark, deliberate, boldly defiant, seductively sweet, silky smooth, rich, and incredibly cathartic, were just a few of the adjectives that came to mind when I imbibed "Renato Jones The One% Season One" and Southern Tier's Thick Mint.

Kaare Kyle Andrews, creator, writer, artist, colorist, and owner, takes us into the dark anything goes world of the One%. A world where the innocent fall prey to the perversions and fetishes of the "Elite" and where everyday people are used, traded, and discarded without a second thought.
A world where money rules, and those who have the money make the rules. (Cue C.R.E.A.M by Wu-Tang Clan)
The One% own more than half the world's wealth. They've crashed economies, bought governments, and have amassed more power than any other group in history.
With that kind of power, how can anyone make them pay? Who will make them pay?
Enter Renato Jones, at first glance he seems to be just another spoiled one percenter born with a platinum spoon in his mouth, but this wolf in sheep's clothing, is a dangerous vigilante, out to even the score.

At first pour Thick Mint is smooth, dark brown, and lightly carbonated, with an aroma of dark malts, chocolate and mint. At first taste your palate will delight to chocolate and mint flavor that is so perfectly balanced in this dessert beer. Thick Mint is rich and seductively bitter/sweet, and with its 10.0% ABV you'll momentarily feel like a one percenter as you imbibe luxury in a glass.  It's very clear the newest member of Southern Tier's Black Water series was inspired by a particular delectable cookie of the mint and chocolate variety.
"Renato Jones The One% Season One" and Southern Tier's Thick Mint  are the perfect pairing of a supercharged capitalistic action revenge thriller and a decadent imperial stout that will make you wonder, if it might be too good for you. Renato Jones and Thick Mint equally demand the imbiber's undivided attention, and both will equally leave you wanting more.
Until next week, read and consume responsibly.

Please feel free to comment. If there's a craft beer or comic you'd like to see paired, feel free to leave your suggestions in the comments.

Weekly Marvel Tidbits with Dustin

Weekly Marvel Tidbits with Dustin

By Dustin M. Best

It's Sunday, which means not only is today your weekly Marvel tidbits featuring, I...Dustin; it is also Mother's Day! So Happy Mother's Day to those who take the time to be a mother figure in someone's life; you truly are appreciated in every sense of the word.

Unless you are trying to conquer the world like Madame Hydra...then again it is villain's month at Uncanny!

aida shield madame hydra marvel agents

Speaking of everyone's favorite ex-LMD turned flesh, free thinking Madame Hydra...

Agents of SHIELD...renewed!

Just ahead of the Season 4 season finale of Agents of SHIELD, comes news that we are in fact being blessed with a Season 5! My Blackheart is filled with happiness...which does not make much sense...unlike this renewal.

I was one, like many, who had originally dropped the show off of my Marvel viewing list 4 episodes into Season 1. Feeling that it was more disheveled than any Superior Foes of Spider-Man plan, I lost interest. Then one dark, snowy winter night I submerged myself into the 3-4 episodes I had cast by the wayside. Much to my delight, SHIELD found its footing, its pace and started to distinguish Fitz & Simmons as actually not being one in the same.

Like a giddy level 1 agent on their first field assignment, I have remained enthralled with the show. Never in my life would I have anticipated catching Deathlok, Absorbing Man, Lash, Mr. Hyde and more on my television screen...on a weekly running show.

So thank you Marvel for continuing to make this fanboy's dreams come true, onward to the Season 4 finale and thankfully not a series finale!

 Game On, New Mutants

Once again, plundering from the vast Game of Thrones cast, Marvel officially pulls in Maisie Williams as Wolfsbane. Not to be forgotten because she is one of my favorite X-Men of all time, Illyana Rasputin (the younger sister of Colossus...comrade), is set to debut and will be played by Anya Taylor-Joy. The concept sketches courtesy of Uncanny! favorite artist, Phil Noto, show how true to form these characters will be from their New Mutants source material.

Marvel Comic Pick of the Week

avengers doom nadia wasp noto phil marvel

This week's Marvel pick of the week is Avengers #7 featuring none other than reformed super villain, Victor Von Doom as the Infamous Iron Man. Phil Noto takes over as artist from Del Mundo who drew the first 6 issues of this wonderfully artistic series.

Victor comes to the Avengers aid when he discovers mystical energy radiating from the Susan Storm Leadership Camp. The reaction to meeting the new Iron Man is wonderfully done as most of the team has the reaction to fight Doom Iron Man where as Nadia (aka The Wasp) geeks out hard seeing one of her science heroes. The playful banter between the two carries through this issue as Nadia is the main source of help as she most resembles a teenage camper.

This book has been absolutely worth checking out on its own, but add in Doom? Yes, please! Make sure to pick up the Infamous Iron Man series as well to further delve into the villain to hero transformation that Victor is undergoing!

Song of the Week

A few weeks late to the Spidey party I am. But at least I found this gem courtesy of the Nerdist. This spectacular song of the week is swell enough to make even the most serious Spider-Man fan crack a smile.

Enjoy your week and stay tuned until next week's Marvel Tidbits with Dustin!

IMBIBE: Issue #4 Jessica Jones: Alias, Vol. 1 Paired With Love Stout

IMBIBE: Issue #4 Jessica Jones: Alias, Vol. 1 Paired With Love Stout
by Rob McFee

This blog post is intended for readers 21 and over.

This Weeks Pairing:

"Jessica Jones: Alias" Volume One- Written by Brian Michael Bendis- Art by- Michaels Gaydos- Colors by Matt Hollingsworth- Published by Marvel Worldwide Inc.(as part of their MAX Comics Imprint)

Love Stout- English Stout- 5.5% Alcholol By Volume (ABV)- Yards Brewing Company-Philadelphia, PA USA

Our pairing begins with our featured subjects, Jessica Jones and Love Stout. At first glance they appear to be your "A" typical moderately attractive woman and English stout; but that's where "A" typical stops.  Both are complex and intriguing, each offering distinctive layers to their respective character and taste. The imbiber who partakes in this pairing must be prepared to unveil those layers to get to the heart and core of each. Therein lies the makings of a superb story and a tasty stout.

Brian Michael Bendis' creation Jessica Jones is a foul mouthed, take no "$#!+", private investigator and former Avenger. She has very little trouble speaking her mind or using her fists to make a point. However, underneath her rough, street wise exterior, Jessica is very much a vulnerable woman. She has been through hell and back and the experience has left her damaged and guarded; not even her closest friend Carol Danvers (Captain Marvel) knows how deep Jessica's scars go. It's that vulnerability and steadfast strength that forges Jessica into an unforgettable character.

Jessica Jones is the type of person who will forsake all, including love and life to ensure the right thing gets done; she is someone you'd want by your side in a fight and someone you could trust with your deepest, darkest secrets. Bendis skillfully pens the story of a true underdog and leaves you little choice, but to root for her and hope for the best.

At first pour Love Stout has a dark brown/black body with a respectable beige head. The aroma offers faint hints of coffee and mocha, which captures the dark and gritty New York City backdrop of Jessica Jones. The taste is bitter on the front end and balances out across your palate with the same essence found upon first sniff. It is smooth and silky with a proper English bite. Love Stout is a stout Yards should be proud of.

The art of Michael Gaydos and the colors of Matt Hollingsworth play well off of Love Stout. Deep inks and the dark colors provide the reader with the necessary stress and tension this comic requires, so much so, that reaching for a sip of your Love Stout as you read, will feel like second nature. I know Love Stout is brewed in Philadelphia, but within its taste and tone beats the heart of New York City.

Thanks to the Netflix series, Jessica Jones may be a house hold name, but believe me when I tell you, what you watched was just the tip of the proverbial iceberg. There is so much more to her story, a story Bendis has masterfully told.

"Jessica Jones: Alias" Volume One is just the beginning of an incredible journey featuring one of the strongest female characters to debut in comics since Wonder Woman.

So the next time you're in a "New York state of mind" pick up Yards Love Stout and "Jessica Jones: Alias" Volume One for an unforgettable evening.

Weekly Marvel Tidbits with Dustin

Weekly Marvel Tidbits with Dustin

By Dustin M. Best

As many people may be aware...I am a bit of a Marvel fanboy and primary apologist. This week has offered a slew of teasers and news regarding the Marvel Cinematic Universe, so I am here to help you digest what Marvel is putting out there!

It's Inhuman!

(Gorgon, Karnak, Black Bolt, Medusa, Crystal, Maximus)

The Inhumans have been a primary focus of Marvel for the past 3-4 years now. Being introduced in Marvel Agents of SHIELD, we have seen a handful of Inhumans pop up including Daisy Johnson (aka Quake), Hive, Lash and Gordon. Since we have yet to see any of the Royal Family, let a lone hear about them, it will be interesting to see how Marvel introduces them into the already existing Inhuman realm.

Will Inhumans acknowledge the fact that several Inhumans have populated on Earth during SHIELD? When will we get our first glimpse of Lockjaw (a massive, teleporting Inhuman dog)? I for one cannot wait for September to arrive and for the terrigen mists to encompass the Marvel Cinematic Universe!

I Want To Runaways

(Gert, Nico, Alex, Chase, Karolina, Molly)

The first Marvel series on Hulu has been announced and it's none other than the super-teen, cult favorite...Runaways! Originally created by the Brian K. Vaughn and Adrian Alphona, there series lasted 30 issues but the main cast has sprung up in several series across Marvel titles.

Originally the team was brought together due to their respective parents running an evil empire, "The Pride", creating an awesome dynamic for these teens. The group is forced to rely on each other in very dynamic ways making this a must watch show when it launches!

Marvel Comic Pick of the Week

The former King of Attilan and Inhuman emperor, Black Bolt, debuted this week with his first solo title...ever! That is hard to believe seeing as how Black Bolt has been active in Marvel titles since 1965 debuting in Fantastic Four #45. Writer Saladin Ahmed and artist Christian Ward do a wonderful job in this opening issue.
Without spoiling much, Black Bolt finds himself imprisoned knowing not where he is. The Silent King ponders how he has gotten there and what events lead to him being chained and shackled. As he soon discovers, he imprisoned himself there. Why? Those are questions soon to be answered so be sure to subscribe to Black Bolt at your local Uncanny!
While you may not enjoy the Inhumans...the artwork by Ward will surely blow you away!

Song of the Week

We here at Uncanny! love music so much that we host the occasional concert. This little segment is dedicated to all our loyal customers who just need that weekly musical lift me up.

This week's selection is by Maryland hip-hop artist, Logic. Off of his "Everybody" album, Logic speaks on the feeling of being alone...the feeling that the life you live isn't what it should be or what society expects it to be. "1-800-273-8255" is not only the name of the track, but the actual number to the national suicide prevention hotline.

Uncanny! Insider: The Button Part Two Review

Uncanny! Insider: The Button Part Two Review

By Dylan Ashcraft

DC’s Comic event “The Button” continued with the latest installment of “The Flash” comic series. We’re picking up off the incredible cliffhanger from “Batman” #21 where Flash sped into the Batcave to find a battered Batman and an electrified Professor Zoom.

While Batman #21 contained a lot of violence, Flash #21 went the reverse route and featured a lot more dialogue and introspective thought. The issue started off with Barry Allen conducting an investigative report on the death of Eobard Thawne, noting the immense amount of radiation coming off of the body. The radiation was connected to the button (the Comedian’s pin from “Watchmen”), however Barry notes that the radiation on Thawne’s body exceeds the amount of radiation that the button could exert itself.

Another interesting note from the investigation was how Thawne’s body was doused in traces of Barry’s Speed force, which differs from the one that Thawne utilizes as Professor Zoom. Barry, after briefly speaking to Bruce, dons his costume and races over to the Hall of Justice which this scene serves as a fun easter egg hunt for long time DC comics fans.

A few of the rather interesting pieces inside of the “Hall of Lost and Found” include Skeets, Martian Manhunter’s classic outfit, and Hourman’s time ship. But probably the most interesting of all, is the cosmic treadmill which Flash makes his way to. He quickly explains how the treadmill helps Wally and himself travel through time, and then as he is about to climb onto the treadmill, Batman drags himself over to Barry and informs him that he is coming along as well.

Barry tells Bruce to not let go and as they start to race through time, they begin seeing visions of the other timelines. Which to comic book fans, are different continuities that we’ve all already read. An example of this is the different formation of the Justice League.

And then, when the cosmic treadmill explodes and drops them off in an unfamiliar timeline, the readers get dropped off at another massive cliffhanger. Flash and Batman land in a familiar location, the Batcave, but it’s more akin to the one Bruce had when he first became the Batman. However, there’s a piece in a glass case that Bruce never recovered from a crime scene, the gun that killed his parents. Another individual soon enters the scene...and we see Thomas Wayne, the Batman from Flashpoint, who gets to interact with his son for the first time since Bruce’s death (in the Flashpoint timeline).

Another massive cliffhanger to cap off another stellar installment of “The Button”. How will the two Batmen interact with one another after getting to finally see each other after decades of one being dead in the other’s timeline? What point in the Flashpoint universe have Bruce and Barry been dropped off in? Will Thomas mention how Martha became the Joker in the Flashpoint universe? All of these questions will be answered in the next issue of the Button, which picks up in “Batman” #22.
