"Wolverine: Old Man Logan" (Collects issues 66-72 of the original series)- Writer, Mark Millar- Artist, Steve McNiven- Published by Marvel Worldwide Inc.
Brooklyn Lager- American Amber Lager- 5.2% Alcohol By Volume (ABV)- Brooklyn Brewery, Brooklyn NY USA
Our pairing begins with a comparison of character to craft beer; Wolverine: Old Man Logan has gotten smarter in his old age relying on strategy and cunning over ferocity and brute force to give him the "edge" over his enemies. Brooklyn Lager is an intelligent well thought out recipe, relying on flavor and richness over brand recognition and flashy commercials, to make it a clear choice in the lager category.
I can almost imagine the smile on Logan's face as he takes his first sip of Brooklyn Lager. The taste would remind him of days gone by and he'd be transported to a favorite bar knocking back a few with a now long forgotten friend.
I can see him in his dystopian future coming across a cache of Brooklyn Lager from what would now be a long dead New York City, and treating it as if he discovered treasure.
At first pour your greeted by a golden amber color that is topped by a two finger thick off white head. The aroma is of malt and hops, as well as, some caramel notes and a hint of yeast. The taste a mildly sweet maltiness with slightly bitter hops, joined by the caramel notes it creates a parade across your palate. Brooklyn Lager is smooth and exceptionally good. The 5.2% ABV is right on the money allowing the imbiber to comfortably read and sample without the concern of pacing one's intake.
"Wolverine: Old Man Logan" is the penultimate Wolverine story; it doesn't get any better than this. Writer Mark Millar (Wanted, Kick-Ass) and his "Civil War" brother in arms, artist Steve McNiven, fuse the dystopian super-hero elements of the X-Men's "Days of Future Past," the wild future-scape of Mad Max, and the tragic pathos of Clint Eastwood's archetypal westerns into a tale that finds Wolverine at a crossroads with who he really wants to be and who he really is.
If you're a Wolverine fan and enjoy a beer that feels like a reward after a long hard day of work, then this is the pairing for you.
